Default BSF to assist forest authorities to check poaching in Kaziranga National Park

GOLAGHAT (Assam): The BSF would assist forest authorities to check poaching of wildlife at Kaziranga National Park which has witnessed unprecedented
killing of the famed one-horned rhinos by poachers in recent months.

A high-level meeting of forest officials, Park authorities, BSF and police personnel was held at Bokakhar today to discuss the killing of wild animals by poachers in the Park, official sources said here.

The BSF, whenever requested, would assist the forest authorities in patrolling inside the Park and share intelligence on poachers and their activities.

A BSF camp is located at Panbari about 10 km from Kaziranga National Park.

It was also decided at the meeting that the BSF would assist in patrolling only after it gets a request in writing from the forest authorities.

The meeting was attended Chief Conservator of Forests (General) V K Bishnoi, CCF (Vigilance) B B Dhar, BSF Assistant Commandant H N Pathak, Park Director S N Buragohain along with all rangers of the Park and other police and forest officials.

The carcass of a female rhino with its horns removed was recovered near the Benga forest camp in Kohora Range.

This is the 13th rhino death in the Park since January this year.

There are currently more than 2100 rhinos in the Park, officials added.

This is good news. We definitely need a BSF calibre force to protect our forests.
