    Default Nature documentation…

    ID: Black rumped flameback woodpecker
While exploring the backyard, rather open nature, was waiting for a regular sighting that I had recorded almost 2 years back. While eagerly looking around, luckily, spotted this beauty, a woodpecker, fly in and perch itself on a neighbouring coconut tree, but rather than pecking on the tree, as seen last time, this beauty just kept hopping onto the top, and almost disappeared. Initially I though it flew off, but never spotted anything rushing off the tree, hence persistently looked around it, only to witness some motion at the base of the coconut growth. Utilizing the zoom of the lens, I observed the activity, only to realize that it was the woodpecker that was poking into the coconut, almost striking it for 4-5 times and later stopped to feed on the elixir, that is the water inside it. An interesting behaviour, not sure I have ever encountered.

Interesting. We have some coconut trees around the house, but have never seen a woodpecker enjoying the coconut water. Nice capture. Thanks for sharing.

Interesting. Once in a while I see tender coconut from my coconut tree with holes at the top that is consistent with what we see in this image. Thanks for sharing.

    Cheers,
