    The situation is nice. However to do full justice to it, you needed good DOF (F16 or so due to short focal length). That would have brought down the shutter speed however. Using a tripod with flash (negatively compensated) would have been the way to go.

    Nice subjects. Considering the shutterspeed you had (1/400), you could probably have increased the aperture value to get good DOF.
    These are not Silk Cotton Bugs, they are nymphs of the Red Milkweed Beetle.
    Just bought a D3000?

    Nice observation. The composition, details and colours are nice. Was it possible for you to move a bit more to the right to get a more frontal view? Thanks for sharing.
