Nikon Announces D7500 DSLR camera with 4K video

Nikon has announced theD7500 DSLR in DX format. Following are the salient features of the D7500:

Sensor: DX Format (1.5x crop) 23.5mm x15.6mm

Resolution: 20.9 Mega pixel CMOS (5568×3712 pixels)

Processor: EXPEED 5

ISO: ISO 100- 51200 as standard and can be expanded upto 1.64 million. However, one shouldn’t expect to be shooting at such high ISOs as more often than not these high ISOs are included as a marketing stunt. Except for some security/surveillance work, such high ISOs in this camera would be virtually unusable.

No OLPF:The Nikon D7500 doesn’t have an optical low pass filter so that the sharpness would be higher. Nikon seems to be confident of controlling the moire.

Burst speed: The D7500 can shoot still images at 8 fps in RAW mode for 50 shots or 100 shots in jpeg mode.

AF:51 point AF. A Group-Area AF is also added for shooting fast action.

LCD: 3.2”tilting LCD has 922K dots and has touchscreen.

Metering: Nikons 180K RGB metering along with Advanced Scene Recognition System is used in the D7500

Auto AF Fine tune: Using live view one can automatically calibrate the autofocus using specific lenses.

Video in D7500: The Nikon D7500 shoots UHD (3840×2160) at upto 30p in H.264, MOV and MP4 formats. It can also shoot in Full HD at upto 60p(NTSC) and 50P (PAL).

The UHD video is shot at 1.5x crop ie the effective focal length increases by 1.5x. The Full HD and HD is shot at 1.3x crop factor.

Since it is a DSLR, the video length is restricted to 29 mins 59 seconds.

With Nikon pushing UHD 4K video at this price level, Canon is the only one to have not introduced 4K video in the lower and medium end DSLRs. That has to change in the near future.

There is a 1/8” head phone jack, 1/8” microphone input and HDMI (mini), USB 2.0 and Micro USB slots.

One can simultaneously record UHD video internally to the SD card and also send uncompressed UHD video through the HDMI out for recording on an external recorder.

There is an in-built 3 axis digital image stabilization in Full HD mode.

The Nikon D7500 body weighs 640gms.
