this is a Grey heron Ardea cinerea . If you click birds often and take an intrest in birding get yourself a Feildguide. It will help you with Ids and is also likely to make your birding trips more intresting

I agree with Roopak. To start with a field guide by Salim Ali will be fine. There are others with more ids like the Ripley's Guide by Pamela Rassmussen and John C Anderton as well.
