I clicked this image on a beach near the Debi river mouth. Ridley come in numbers upto 2 lakhs every year to Odisha for mating and nesting. Unfortunately around 17 thousand die every year. A major portion of these deaths is due to turtles getting caught in trawler nets and drowning. These carcasses are thrown overboard by the fishermen into the sea. These get washed ashore and are a delight for Dogs and Jackals. A sorry state of these wonderful creatures given that around 1 out of around 1000 hatchlings survives to adulthood. If effective measures and restrictions on trawling are not enforced, we might actually witness the extinction of another species right in front of our eyes very soon.
