Nice observation. It is always better to photograph in frontal lighting, as the shadows dont help in getting details of texture. Do check if the lens is clean. A higher shutter speed would be good. You can use some support as the more steady the camera is the better is the image. Thanks for sharing.
P.S - Please avoid posting images with buildings in the background.

Agree with the previous comments. If your camera has got macro mode, then you can explore that as well.

If i'm not mistaken, it is a termite mound, not an anthill.
I agree that frontal lighting is preferable. But in this image, I like the contrast between the shadowed and lit parts of the mound. Did you try other compositions/angles?
