Painted Stork (Mycteria leucocephala)
This particular bird is from the Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary on the outskirts of Gurgaon. Not so long ago, the Forest department’s policy of Draining the Lake in the sanctuary to eliminate the African black fish critically threatened this resident birds within the Sanctuary. Deprived of the water of the lake, the Storks abandoned the colonies within the park. However a bountiful monsoon has ensured that the lake is full again and the Painted stork colony is thriving. This individual was photographed in one of the numerous trips it made to bring twigs to reinforce and expand its existing nest.
