Thanks Mrudul. It wasn't too far from us. I guess the problem might have been that the dog was sitting in shade and we were in good light!

This happens when a large portion of the image is brightly lit and the subject (in this case dhole) is in the shadow. So the camera meter is exposed accordingly and the subject is underexposed. In such cases, you have to be sure about the exposure compensation you want to dial in (if you are shooting in aperture priority or shutter priority modes).
I like the inquisitive pose. Wish the dhole was directly lit by sunlight. Their coat comes out well when properly lit.
