Thirty rare white-backed vultures were killed when a train ran over them in Maharajganj district of Uttar Pradesh, an official said Saturday.
The accident took place Friday near the Nautanwa railway crossing in Laxmipur town, about 630 km from Delhi.
'The birds were eating a dog carcass on the track near the Nautanwa railway crossing when the accident occurred,' Nirmal Kumar Srivastava, sub-divisional officer of the forest department, told IANS on phone.
'The birds were identified as white-backed vultures after a post mortem was conducted Saturday morning in Laxmipur,' he added.
White-backed vultures have become rare in India as they succumb to kidney failure and visceral gout when they eat a dead animal that has been treated with diclofenac, an anti-inflammatory drug.
