I think your processing is letting you down. High contrast and high saturation. Since you are using an intermediate lens, it is better to try and compose environmental images ie. images showing habitat. So better to use high depth of field ie. apertures of f9/11 and try and get lot of areas in focus. The moment you try to get closeup by cropping images, the details vanish.
