GoPro Hero 9 Black shoots 5K video

GoPro Hero 9 Black  shoots 5K video

GoPro has launched Hero 9 Black at $449 US dollars and it will be available in late October 2020.

The Hero 9 Black has a 23.6 MP sensor, a big LCD at the back and one at the front. It is slightly larger and heavier than the Hero 8 black.

The GoPro Hero 9 Black can shoot at 5K 30p , 5k24fps and 4K 60pvideo. One can do lot of high frame rates at lower resolutions. There is no 5K 25fps for PAL countries.

One can do slight punch in in post and finish in 4K while after shooting in 5K.

The Hero 9 Black can also shoot still photos at 20Mp. So this is a big jump from the earlier 12 Mp still shooting capability.

There is a 2.27 inch LCD at the back and a smaller 1.4 inch LCD in the front. The front LCD will help in framing the shot. However, keeping the front LCD on will also lead to more power consumption.

At the bottom of the camera is a foldable mount. GoPro calls it folding fingers. There is a also a status light infront.

There is a 1080p livestreaming option using the GoPro app to social media. So one can do livestreaming of activities on the go, provided there is network in the area.

GoPro has got some optional mods. One can plugin a 3.5mm mic input using the Media Mod. This mod is priced at $79 US Dollars.  The Media mod is primarily designed for vloggers and people who want live streaming. It features a built-in directional mic for enhanced voice capture, 3.5mm mic port, HDMI-out for playback on external monitors, plus two cold-shoe mounts for lights, LCD screens or additional mics. Built tough and weather-resistant, even the wind is no match for this mod. The removable foam mic cover suppresses wind gust up to 20 mph (32 kph). It is designed for use with GoPro Light Mod and Display Mod, plus third-party accessories. However, this is not meant for underwater use.

The Hero9 Black Max lens mod can be fitted by simply removing the front lens. It gives a 155˚ FOV digital lens. When you use this lens mod, there is a horizon lock feature which keeps the videos locked on the horizontal or vertical axis even if the camera is mounted off centre or rotated. In this mod, one is limited to shooting HyperSmooth stabilisation only up to 2.7K 60p. The Hero 9 Black Max lens mod is waterproof upto 5 Meters but one shouldn’t be using it underwater due to distortion. The price of the Max lens mod is $99 US Dollars.

There is a maximum 100Mbps video bit rate. Video can be recorded in MP4 in H.264 or AVC codec or MP4 in H.265/HEVC codec.

GoPro has included what it calls as HyperSmooth 3.0 video stabilization as well as many other features.

Price: $449.99 US Dollars. India price yet to be announced.
