This time I spotted quite a few woodpeckers on my sirsi trip...unfortunately could not capture any.

There seems to be some camera shake here. Also the woodpecker has lost details, probably due to the crop. Nice behaviour record. I don't think you could have done much to get a better angle (considering this is from the same series as your earlier post).

Nice behaviour captured. The composition with the diagonal branch is nice. Agree that there seems some camera shake, a higher shutter speed would have helped to freeze the action. Look forward to more.

The diagonal branch is nice. I agree about the camera shake. You can try using a beanbag to stabilise your shots. It can be easily made at home. Thanks for sharing.

Also, one should note that the shutter speed is 1/250. The normal rule of thumb says shutter speed should be 1/focal length to get a sharp image. The focal length is 400mm. The crop factor of the camera is 1.6 . So the effective focal length in 35mm terms is 400*1.6 = 640mm.

So the shutter speed should be 1/640mm to get sharp shots. With the IS you can get sharp images at lower shutter speeds as well. And on top of it, the image is cropped.

The branch appears better as it is stationary. Clearly there is subject movement ie. the wood pecker is at its job and the shutter speed is low to arrest the motion.
