The issue is that light is on the opposite side. If light was from behind you, then the eyes would have been properly lit. Whenever the bird is still for a moment, you should click. During those times, you can get a sharp shot with relatively lower shutter speed. The composition is fine. Keep on trying. I am sure you will soon get better and better.

The composition is fine. The eye contact is nice. Agree about the light. You can crop the tip of the out of focus leaf from the top right corner. Thanks for sharing.
