I am not sure about this image not being cropped.
The only cameras that produce square images are medium format cameras (say a Hasselblad 6x6). The cameras we used these days are the 35mm format cameras. The 35mm film cameras used to have 24mm by 36 mm negatives. The sensor size of the digital slrs are smaller (except for the full frame Canon 1DS cameras, Canon 5D, 5DII, Nikon D3, D3x etc). The compact cameras have much smaller sensors than the DSLRs. All of those have a rectangular sensor and the output images are also rectangular. So square size is not possible without cropping/cutting a part of length or breadth side (or by just stretching one side to make it square).
A sharper perch would have looked better. Thanks for sharing.
