In many areas conflict is so poorly documented and understood. While the suffering of the poor is real and needs to be addressed, the conflicts are largely exaggerated and often the wildlife is implicated.
Mitigation measure comes only as a last resort. There are several steps ahead of mitigation. We have the tendency to go for the soft targets. The elephants certainly are soft targets and in the event of conflict the elephant is comfortably removed from the site while we seldom bother about mushrooming activities in and around elephant habitats and corridors. These kind of suggestions will embolden the people to eat up more space from the elephant habitat.
