It looks like an Owlet Moth (Spirama retorta) to me. Not sure if this species occurs in Chennai, so better if you could get it confirmed. Try cross-checking the ID from other sources.

Thanks Abhishek. It certainly appears to be an Owlet Moth (Spirama retorta). As to whether the species occurs in Chennai?-----------? Will have a go at it in a while & come back. Difficult to find an exact match.
